This is the latest news by the NYT on 7/10/17 about the meeting at Trump Towers on June 9, 2016 attended by Paul Manafort, Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner with the Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya. So far the White House has been attempting to paint this gathering in an innocent light by alluding that Donald Trump Jr. had been tricked into arranging this contact on a promise of the lawyer having opposition research on Hillary Clinton. But once she was at Trump Towers, she had changed the subject to adoptions. Mr. Trump Jr. claimed that he had no idea who she was before they were introduced.

This story as told above, has been proven to be completely “fake news.” It turns out that Donald Trump Jr. had ample notice as to exactly who this lawyer was.

Here is the rest of the story…

July 10, 2017, Matt Apuzzo, Jo Becker, Adam Goldman and Maggie Haberman of the New York Times latest blockbusting report, “Trump Jr. Was Told in Email of Russian Effort to Aid Campaign.”

Excerpts:

“Before arranging a meeting with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer he believed would offer him compromising information about Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump Jr. was informed in an email that the material was part of a Russian government effort to aid his father’s candidacy, according to three people with knowledge of the email.”

“The email to the younger Mr. Trump was sent by Rob Goldstone, a publicist and former British tabloid reporter who helped broker the June 2016 meeting. In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Trump acknowledged that he was interested in receiving damaging information about Mrs. Clinton, but gave no indication that he thought the lawyer might have been a Kremlin proxy.”

“Mr. Goldstone’s message, as described to The New York Times by the three people, indicates that the Russian government was the source of the potentially damaging information. It does not elaborate on the wider effort by Moscow to help the Trump campaign. There is no evidence to suggest that the promised damaging information was related to Russian government computer hacking that led to the release of thousands of Democratic National Committee emails.”

Image result for photos of paul manafort jared kushner donald trump jr“But the email is likely to be of keen interest to the Justice Department and congressional investigators, who are examining whether any of President Trump’s associates colluded with the Russian government to disrupt last year’s election. American intelligence agencies have determined that the Russian government attempted to sway the election in favor of Mr. Trump.”

(Donald Trump Jr. lawyer) ”In my view, this is much ado about nothing. During this busy period, Robert Goldstone contacted Don Jr. in an email and suggested that people had information concerning alleged wrongdoing by Democratic Party front-runner, Hillary Clinton, in her dealings with Russia,” he said to The Times in an email on Monday. “Don Jr.’s takeaway from this communication was that someone had information potentially helpful to the campaign and it was coming from someone he knew. Don Jr. had no knowledge as to what specific information, if any, would be discussed.”

Image result for photos of paul manafort jared kushner donald trump jr“It is unclear whether Mr. Goldstone had direct knowledge of the origin of the damaging material. One person who was briefed on the emails said it appeared that he was passing along information that had been given to him by others.”

“Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, and Paul J. Manafort, the campaign chairman at the time, also attended the June 2016 meeting in New York. Representatives for Mr. Kushner referred requests for comments back to an earlier statement, which said he voluntarily disclosed the meeting to the federal government. He has deferred questions on the content of the meeting to Donald Trump Jr.”

“In a series of tweets, the president’s son insisted he did what anyone connected to a political campaign would have done — to hear out potentially damaging information about an opponent. He maintained that his various statements about the meeting weren’t in conflict.”

“Obviously I’m the first person on a campaign to ever take a meeting to hear info about an opponent… went nowhere but had to listen,” he wrote in one tweet. In another, he added, “No inconsistency in statements, meeting ended up being primarily about adoptions. In response to further Q’s I simply provided more details.”

“The younger Mr. Trump, who had a reputation during the campaign for having meetings with a wide range of people eager to speak to him, did not join his father’s administration. He runs the family business, the Trump Organization, with his brother, Eric.”

Image result for photos of paul manafort jared kushner donald trump jr“On Monday (7/10/17), after news reports that he had hired a lawyer, he indicated in a tweet that he would be open to speaking to the Senate Intelligence Committee, one of the congressional panels investigating Russian meddling in the election. “Happy to work with the committee to pass on what I know,” the younger Mr. Trump wrote.”

“Mr. Goldstone represents the Russian pop star Emin Agalarov, whose father was President Trump’s business partner in bringing the Miss Universe pageant to Moscow in 2013. In an interview Monday, Mr. Goldstone said he was asked by Mr. Agalarov to set up the meeting with Donald Trump Jr. and the Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya.”

“He said, ‘I’m told she has information about illegal campaign contributions to the D.N.C.,’” Mr. Goldstone recalled, referring to the Democratic National Committee. He said he then emailed Donald Jr., outlining what the lawyer purported to have.”

Image result for photos of paul manafort jared kushner donald trump jr“But Mr. Goldstone, who wrote the email over a year ago, denied any knowledge of involvement by the Russian government in the matter, saying that never dawned on him. “Never, never ever,” he said. Later, after the email was described to The Times, efforts to reach him for further comment were unsuccessful.”

“In the interview, he said it was his understanding that Ms. Veselnitskaya was simply a “private citizen” for whom Mr. Agalarov wanted to do a favor. He also said he did not know whether Mr. Agalarov’s father, Aras Agalarov, a Moscow real estate tycoon known to be close to President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, was involved. The elder Mr. Agalarov and the younger Mr. Trump worked together to bring a Trump Tower to Moscow, but the project never got off the ground.”

“Mr. Goldstone also said his recollection of the meeting largely tracked with the account given by the president’s son, as outlined in the Sunday statement Mr. Trump released in response to a Times story on the June 2016 meeting. Mr. Goldstone said that the last time he had communicated with the younger Mr. Trump was to send him a congratulatory text after the November election, but added that he did speak to the Trump Organization over the past weekend, before giving his account to the media.”

Image result for photos of paul manafort jared kushner donald trump jr“Donald Trump Jr., who initially told The Times that Ms. Veselnitskaya wanted to talk about the resumption of adoption of Russian children by American families, acknowledged in the Sunday statement that one subject of the meeting was possibly compromising information about Mrs. Clinton.”

“But he said that the Russian lawyer produced nothing of consequence, and that the meeting ended after she began talking about the Magnitsky Act — an American law that blacklists suspected Russian human rights abusers. The 2012 law so enraged Mr. Putin that he halted American adoptions of Russian children.”

“Mr. Goldstone said Ms. Veselnitskaya offered “just a vague, generic statement about the campaign’s funding and how people, including Russian people, living all over the world donate when they shouldn’t donate” before turning to her anti-Magnitsky Act arguments.”

Veselnitskaya

“Ms. Veselnitskaya, for her part, denied that the campaign or compromising material about Mrs. Clinton ever came up at all. She said she never acted on behalf of the Russian government. A spokesperson for Mr. Putin said on Monday that the Russian president did not know Ms. Veselnitskaya, and had no knowledge of the June 2016 meeting.”

“The White House press office, however, accused Mrs. Clinton’s team of hypocrisy. The office circulated a January 2017 article published in Politico, detailing how officials from the Ukranian government tried to help the Democratic candidate conduct opposition research on Mr. Trump and some of his aides.”

“The president learned from his aides about the 2016 meeting at the tail end of the trip, according to one White House official. But some people in the White House had known for several days that it had occurred, because Mr. Kushner had revised his foreign contact disclosure document to include it.”

The president was aggravated by the news of the meeting, according to one person close to him — less over the fact that it had happened, and more because it was yet another story about Russia that had swamped the media cycle.

  1. You know what really saddens me about this Gronda? It’s that more and more mainstream media outlets like NBC who did a report on this tonight, are questioning if just collusion itself, is actually illegal. It’s starting to seem that the only way they’re going to get Trump or his minions, is by pursuing the lying and obstruction of justice angle. I mean to me, if you meet with someone associated with a foreign government for the expressed purpose of finding out negative info about them, that’s treason. But obviously I must be wrong about that.

    • Dear Jill,

A lot of these pundits don’t know enough to say anything along these lines. But what Donald Trump Jr. did was wrong, wrong, wrong. For me what he did borders on treason.

It is obvious that these players have no moral compass. Unfortunately there may not be codified laws about this sleaze of collecting opposition research on someone from even an adversarial foreign government. I don’t know enough to say. But there are campaign finance laws which could be at play.

      Hugs, Gronda

    • DEAR kIM,

I talked to my son who knows a little about this stuff. He said for someone to be charged with treason, we have to be at war which we are not with regards to Russia. However, if we were at war, what has been happening could very well be treason.

When we are not at war, there are a whole host of laws that could be applicable. He reiterated what I said, that a lot of the pundits are not knowledgeable enough in this area.

  2. Dear Mz. Gronda and Jill,
While many of us hold the opinion that the current administration and various members of the Presidents support staff, both currently and during the period of the election process are guilty of “Treason”, it would seem that there is really no factual basis that has been exposed as of this time to bring those charges to fruition. The constitution has a very narrow definition of the term and the process necessary to not only bring those charges, but to prosecute them as well. The supreme court decisions do not give any support to our opinions either, as the past offers little in common to the present problems we face in this political climate. I will give a link, to a source that while I don’t agree with some of their opinions, in this case they seem to be relatively solid and factual in their writing. I might add that this source, due to the present political party in power would probably be the source most likely to be broadly accepted by the legal system and the public.

In hindsight, I did read a while back an opinion piece discussing the theory that due to Russia and this nation having been in more or less a non declared war for many years that the requirements necessary for charges of treason could possibly be met. However it has to be noted, that this is an area that has never been argued and it is likely that with the present membership of the Supreme Court, would not succeed.

    • Dear Crustyolemothman,

After Kim of By Hook Or By Book ~ Book Reviews, News, & Other Stuff asked a question about this, I started to do some research. It is unsettling to find out that there may not be any laws directly on point about these facts meeting the standard required for a treason charge.

I just talked to my son, an attorney who said there are other laws besides treason which will come into play.

  3. Gronda, a former CIA official said it best. This is a standard Russian approach. You get a target into a small compromising position to see if they are bendable. Then, you build from there. By taking the meeting, Trump Jr., Kushner and Manafort took the bait. He said Manafort should have known better with his past dealing with the Russians.

Either way, the denial of the meeting and changing story coupled with this email fly in the face of the Trump team saying they had no meetings with Russians. We also should not lose sight of the mishandling of this whole affair. Whether collusion occurred, there has been lying, denial and mishandling. Keith

    • Dear Keith,

There is definite wrongdoing here. This smells like corruption at the highest levels. This is no longer smoke, now there is a fire.

      • Gronda, to me there has been a fire for awhile. People are not paying attention to signals that the would not tolerate from another. Too many still feel their worth is tied to this man because they voted for him.

What amazes beyond the lying and denial is the mishandling, which reveals an incompetence which is evident in other areas of the White House. Keith
