Can You Believe Most Republicans Approved Of President’s Performance At 7/16/18 Helsinki Summit?

The following news is important to digest. The propaganda/ gas-lighting loop on the republicans delivered to them by the republican President Donald Trump’s lies backed up by FOX TV and other right wing pundits repeating them, along with the echo chamber of the Russian bots has been extremely effective.

The latest polls as detailed by Axios shows that 79% of republicans / president’s base approve of how President Trump handled the July 16, 2018 Helsinki Trump-Putin summit. This explains in part, why GOP legislators were looking for any possible reason to cover for him even when his back-tracking was patently a falsehood.

Here’s the rest of the story…

On July 19, 2018, Mike Allen of Axios penned the following news item, “Poll: Huge GOP majority backs Trump’s Putin performance”

We told you yesterday why elected Republicans go so silent so quickly when they disagree so strongly with President Trump: They fear it’s political suicide to speak up. Now we have an exclusive, new Axios/SurveyMonkey poll that shows why those fears are real:

See: (Data: SurveyMonkey online poll conducted July 16-17, 2018 among a total sample of 2,100 adults living in the United States. Margin of error of ±3 percentage points; Poll methodology; Chart: Lazaro Gamio/Axios)

“Be smart: This poll foreshadows the coming national drama. Every piece of data, and virtually every public action of elected Republican officials, shows Trump will have overwhelming and probably unbreakable party support, regardless of what Robert Mueller finds with his Russia probe.”

More from the poll:
  • Americans are split on whether the allegations of Russian interference are a serious issue (50%) or a distraction (47%). This breaks cleanly along party lines, with 85 % of Republicans seeing it as a distraction and 85 percent of Democrats seeing it as a serious issue. Among Independents, 56 percent see it as a serious issue.
  • More than half of Americans (55%) don’t trust the Trump administration to take steps to prevent foreign interference in November’s midterms.

  1. i believe it. In an interview yesterday, a Trump minion was asked what he thought about the Helsinki debacle and he said he staunchly (not his word, I don’t think he’s literate) supports Trump because “he is an entrepreneur, a businessman, and is working to better the poor man”. Are they living in a cave somewhere with Fox news?

  2. This disgusts me, but I know it to be true, for I saw & heard the mind-numbed followers yesterday still throwing their support to him. One comment I hear all too often is that he “created jobs”, which, of course, is a falsehood, but he’s said it often enough that they believe it. I wonder, since layoffs as a result of his tariffs have already begun, how they will feel when their jobs go by the wayside? Sigh. His followers are blind and purposefully ignorant, but dangerous and will make November a challenge. Thanks for the info, Gronda.

    • Dear Jill,

I’m sick over this. These are the same folks who are okay with the president’s cruel immigration rules and they see nothing wrong with how President Trump performed at the 7/16/18 Helsinki Trump-Putin summit.

But it is important for us to deal with this reality. We need some ideas to negate their influence. I’m doing some thinking on this subject.

      • I, too, am sick over it and I am feeling … helpless, as if we are standing by watching two planes headed for each other in the sky, yet powerless to do anything. But you’re right … we can and must find ways to negate their influence. I shall put on my thinking cap, too. Keep me posted on your ideas! I suppose hiring a hit-man is out of the question?

        • Dear Jill,

It’s a great idea but we don’t want a visit by the FBI.

I have noticed a pattern. The republicans announce a problem. The problem doesn’t even have to be real. Examples are: Obamacare is a terrible idea, law; there is a war on Christmas; there is a crisis at the border were racists, murderers, MS-13 gang members coming to get us; “the Black Lives Matter” movement is a hate group/ a terrorist organization.

Then they create these talking points where the elected officials; the FOX TV pundits all spout the same lines which are then reinforced by Russian bots.

We have to select some issues like “We don’t want to be Russia;.” We are in favor of Medicaid expansion;” We are in favor of helping the Dreamers, etc. all the elected officials and left wing pundits spout the same lines, educate the public, and then we send out a bunch of US bots.

        • I don’t know … I might be willing to risk a visit from the FBI if it brought about an end to the era of Trump.

Good observation on the pattern you’ve noticed. You’ve got great ideas. We definitely need to have a platform, a set of the issues that are most important to us and keep drilling them into people’s heads. Educate the public, and use Trump’s tactic of saying it so often that people cannot forget. You should be in Congress!

          Hugs!!!

  3. Note to Readers: To me, there are two things at play. One is an increasing number of Republicans have left the party, leaving unrealistic high percentage of Trump supporters. Two is Trump has been very successful at painting all criticism as coming from Democrats and the media. What you and I send as obvious lying and bullying, they do not see it.

His followers dismiss any obvious lying as all politicians do it. But, very few have done it at the level he has with the brazenness he uses.

With that said, this week there has been a noticeable break among Republicans from their party leader. I do believe his weak behavior may have prevented the impeachment movement by the Freedom caucus of Rod Rosenstein.

By the way, Ronald Reagan would turn over in his grave to hear what Republicans are saying about Putin. Putin cannot believe how well it had turned out for him. Keith

You never have to apologize here. I am at that point in life, that if I worried about everything I did wrong, I wouldn’t ever leave the house. I find that I’m making more and more fubars in my writing. I could use an editor.

    • Dear Keith,

Here’s the problem in a nutshell. The president admires the leadership of President Putin and wishes he could run the USA to be more like Russia.

Most Americans do not share the president’s viewpoint. What he despises, most of us love like the free press, non-politically influenced judicial and law enforcement entities; we welcome diversity, different points of views.

What drives the president and his supporters crazy, most of us believe these same attributes make our country, that shining city on a hill.

We want to be working towards making this a greater country, a place where everyone has a real chance to become the best that they can be. But we advertise our faults and we openly talk about them without having the fear that we’ll be thrown in jail. We are free to criticize our leaders without fear of retribution.

If we were to governed by a President Putin copycat (which we are but it’s a poor copy), there would be a revolution against him. We don’t want to be a part of his kind of governing which may work for Russia, but we reject that style of autocratic style of leadership, outright.

    • Dear Nan,

That Newt Gingrich FOX News opinion piece represents the GOP members’ current talking points.

What this opinion piece is based on is a lot of fake news. 1st) President Obama did impose two rounds of sanctions in 2014 and before he left office. President Obama wanted to present a bi-partisan announcement about Russia’s intervention in US politics but the Senate Speaker Mitch McConnell blocked this.

Second, the president stopped UN Ambassador Nikki Haley from following through on additional sanctions against Russia after he had been heard screaming throughout the White House that the sanctions that were imposed as a sign of cooperation with UK for having 2 peoples poisoned, were too harsh and were a mistake. President Trump sold weapons to Ukraine only after its officials agreed to not cooperate with the FBI’s Trump- Russia probe. The US Congress had to pass a bill to tie the president’s hands from being able to lift any current sanctions against Russia.

The GOP talking points about the president’s toughness against Russia is a big fat lie. They actually think we will buy their BS. Of course, the president’s base will buy these tall tales, hook-line and sinker.

  4. Totally not surprised! Many alt-right conservatives believe in peace and prosperity with Russia and all nations. Even if it means fixing the election and cheating Hillary out of a win. That means supporting Putin’s regime and interfering with the election by default. The rationale being that Hillary will have a temper tantrum at some point and start WW3! For some reason, conservatives believe that Hillary is a Russophobe and will antagonize Putin at every turn. That’s why Putin proactively took her out of the equation by manipulating social media sentiment to tip the scale towards Trump!

And that’s how Trump won despite the our IC, Comey, Rosenstein stating that Russia’s interference did not affect the outcome of the election or change a single vote. I’m not quite sure why they said that, b/c if that’s the case then why pursue this investigation further if the election result was legit?

So yes, Russia meddled with our process, but not to worry, they did not influence the direction or result, so it’s all good? This never made any sense to me. Perhaps you or the readers can explain this non-sequitur lame explanation given by our intelligence officials.

So the real intention of the investigation is not to prevent future interference, but to find a way to impeach Trump at all cost! If that’s the real objective… then hey, I’m all for it! What’s good for the goose….

    • Dear 1EarthUnited,

I do not share your antipathy towards Hillary Clinton. She is far from perfect as she is of the human race but she would not be an embarrassment on the world stage. I would much rather have the experience of Hillary Clinton at the helm than what we have now.

President Trump will not be impeached unless he has been found to have conspired with Russia to win. Then he will be ousted faster than a speeding bullet. No, a foreign country messing with the US election is not an acceptable standard that most Americans would ever accept.

There is no way that I or anyone I know could accept your premises. I have to respectfully have to disagree on all points.

    • Gronda, I totally understand. Thanks for listening to my POV. Many hackers and computer geeks in my circle think it silly to equate messing around with social media as “interference with elections”. The irony not being lost here b/c the US interferes with the elections of sovereign nations all over the world!

The U.S. is no stranger to interfering in the elections of other countries:

      https://www.pri.org/stories/2016-12-14/brief-history-times-us-meddled-others-elections

As for Hillary’s temper and mental state… well she’s legendary! 🙂

      https://www.wnd.com/2016/10/top-36-hillary-f-bombs-flip-outs-and-eye-popping-tantrums/

Google “Hillary Clinton Temper/ Insanity” the hits are endless!

For what it’s worth, my research does indicate that Trump has colluded with Russia in fixing the election, but not b/c of FB and Twitter, that’s just a cover that our IC and MSM are using. The real truth is much more disturbing. That’s why I’m very confident that Trump will be impeached… if Mueller is allowed to do his job correctly. There’s a very good chance that Trump’s collusion may be covered up in the name of “national security” just like Mrs Clinton’s email server investigation. Oh well, power players and their games…..

    • Dear Hugh,

I think I have this thing about his base figured out. About 37% of the voting public support President Trump. There are the Evangelicals which comprise about 35% of his base. But add to this, the NRA more ardent members; the anti-immigration hard-liners, those who belong to racist organizations, those who are closet racists, those who aren’t Christian but who are still anti-LGBT, conservative Jewish members and those who are beholden to these groups. It is no wonder that the President’s supporters stick to him like glue.

If I had a magic wand, I send them to live in Russia as they seem to be so enamored of this communist totalitarian form of governing.

  5. Dear 1EarthUnited,

I am not and will not buy the right wing media hype coupled with Russian bots, the disinformation campaign against Hillary Clinton which is not based on facts, independent research, evidence, etc.. No, she is not perfect as she is human but I, personally would not have suffered from embarrassment and shame whenever she was on the world stage, She would have represented US interests first, instead of foreign countries like Russia, Israel, UAE, etc. Why do you think other countries preferred President Trump? He is not as tough on them as she would have been. SHE WOULD HAVE LOOKED AND ACTED SANE, WITH MANNERS AND DECENCY.

Please respect the fact that I strongly disagree with these attempts to share disinformation about her without having used /referred to credible multiple resources. Please don’t try this again as my patience is wearing thin.

There are credible conservative media outlets like the National Review, the Federalist, the Weekly Standard, The Wall Street Journal, etc.

DO NOT USE A SOURCE ON THIS SITE LIKE WND AGAIN. I will be blogging on this issue within the next possible of weeks and it will not be pretty.

The following info is from Quora:

    For center-right sources I recommend:

Washington Times – For general news but with a focus on American politics. This is my go-to right-center U.S. media source for national matters.

Washington Examiner – For more in-depth political analysis and commentary.

The “Real Clear” family of sites (Real Clear Politics, Real Clear Science, etc.) – This is more a news aggregator or portal, and it aggregates material from a wide range of sites, including both ones with a left-bias and a right-bias, but I think the bias of story selection is center-right, and fairly high-quality. When these portals link to stories on sites I don’t usually trust (as occasionally happens) they usually seem to be better-sourced and more factual.

And numerous regional sources (which I explain how to find below)
For a libertarian perspective, I recommend Reason. CATO Institute is also a great libertarian think-tank and it publishes some good material on their site.

If you want to find more sources, particularly regional sources, I also recommend looking through Media Bias / Fact Check’s right-center category. That has a lot of regional newspapers and media outlets listed, and it can be good if you want to locate something with a center-right lean in your area. This site is a bit limited in that it lumps both libertarian and true center-right sources into the same category, but you can read on the page what the perspective of a particular publication is. They also have a list of right-biased sites. However, these listings are indiscriminate — they list high and low quality sites alike. You need to go through them and also look at the “factual reporting” field.

I recommend only reading things that they rate as “high” or “very high” in the “factual reporting” category. All of the ones I mentioned above are like this.

I hope you find this useful. I personally wish that more people would read the high-quality right- and center-right biased sources. In recent years, right-wing politics has been dominated by sensationalistic stuff that is sloppy on the facts, like Fox News or worse, Breitbart, both of which I recommend steering clear of. I think the sources I gave above can be useful both if you are conservative yourself, and you want to have accurate info and well-reasoned conservative ideology, or if you’re liberal and you want to expose yourself to more conservative perspectives to understand conservatives better.

I place WND in a worse category than Breibart.
