Dems: Focus on Winning the White House to Save US Democracy from Autocratic Wannabes

From The Atlantic

In 2024 Americans cast their ballots in favor of the democrat POTUS Biden to be their presidential candidate during the primary elections despite many having concerns about his age. But because POTUS Biden flopped in the recent presidential debate against the GOP MAGA ex-president, the professional political punditry class like Mark Leibovich of the Atlantic, have been regurgitating concerns about his ageism issues again like they did in 2022. What they don’t seem to get, is that in a democracy, the voters have the last say. Millions of voters have spoken by choosing to give POTUS Biden a shot, despite knowing his ageism issues.

As per the October 20, 2023 article by Media Matters, “since President Joe Biden announced his 2024 campaign, 5 major US papers have mentioned Biden’s age in 332 articles and Trump’s in just 158.”

All the media attention being devoted to spotlighting POTUS Biden’s signs of aging at every occasion could cost democrat POTUS Biden, the presidency. The result means no less than the subjugation of Americans to autocratic minority rule based on the recent Supreme Court’s (Trump v. United States) ruling that vastly expands US presidential powers and the Project 2025 900-page blueprint by the conservative Heritage Foundation on how to govern as a minority coalition modeling the far-right revolution designed to reshape how the US government functions. The coup d’état against US democracy would be the election of a wannabe autocratic Fascist leader at the helm who as a professional TV reality star performs better on the debate stage than POTUS Joe Biden.

Yes, the media is complicit in helping the ex-president with a possible win because at this time in US history, our democracy is about to be set on fire, while the punditry class becomes even more preoccupied with POTUS Biden’s age. They’re not even noticing that there’s a fire growing and threatening to burn down our US democracy including many freedoms that we’ve come to take for granted.

Americans are scared. For example, they worry if we will be able to exert power by having our votes counted fairly and securely; to criticize and protest peacefully against those in power without serious repercussions; to marry the person they love of the same sex; to have equal access to life-saving healthcare and a quality education on a par with other wealthy developed countries, etc.?

With our democracy under serious threat, it’s maddening to watch the punditry class with mob-like vigor overly obsessing on the president’s age issues.

As for me, absent this single-minded media spotlight on POTUS Biden’s ageism issues, I want to know if these professional prognosticators can produce easily verified evidence that he can’t possibly win in November 2024, and that a win would be much more likely with another democrat party nominee.

And then there’s reality…The chances of POTUS Biden dropping out of the race and not endorsing his VP Kamala Harris, are zilch.  If he did anything else, he’d invite a competitive primary fight and encourage other Democrats to get into the race after it’s too late to meet the filing deadlines. At this point, anyone who gets in the race would have to obligate voters to write in the candidates’ names on the ballot.

Instead, Dems should be marching in lock step towards firing their ire in every way possible against the extremely flawed TV reality star GOP MAGA ex-president who’s a wannabe dictator and a real threat to US democracy. While the professional prognosticators may not mind wasting hundreds of millions of dollars on a chaotic presidential primary skirmish, with another nominee not gaining consensus until late August, and with no proof of producing better results, I do.

Then don’t forget that POTUS Biden’s strongest constituency consists of Black voters, the majority of whom are still encouraging him to stay in the presidential race. As per an AP report, “Antjuan Seawright, a Black Democratic consultant who is close to House Rep. Jim Clyburn, a Biden ally, put it plainly. “Joe Biden isn’t going anywhere. But if he does, “anyone other than Kamala would be malpractice — and it would tear the party apart.”

As for me, I’d be ecstatic over a Vice President Kamala Harris-US Senator Bernie Sanders democratic party presidential ticket.

Both support POTUS Joe Biden. US Senator Bernie Sanders provides direction by reminding Dems that voters aren’t concerned about who’ll win a Grammy Award contest for best singer. They know Biden is old. He’s not as articulate as he once was:

“What we have got to focus on is policy, whose policies have and will benefit the vast majority of the people in this country, who has the guts to take on corporate America, who is talking about expanding Medicare so we cover dental, hearing and vision, who’s talking about raising the cap on the taxes that people pay into Social Security so we can raise social security benefits and extend the life of Social Security for 75 years, who’s talking about a permanent child tax credit to cut childhood poverty in America by 50%.”

But in the midst of all the doomsday Biden rhetoric, there’s a bright spot. “Never-Trumper” Stuart Stevens penned a recent Atlantic article, pushing back on the “Dump-Biden” pundits.

Stuart Steven has been one of the most successful Republican Party campaign operatives in a generation, helping Republican candidates win elections at every level for decades. He’s now a “Never Trumper” and the co-founder of the Lincoln Project.

As per the July 3, 2024 Atlantic article by Stuart Stevens The Antidemocratic Uprising Against Joe Biden:”

Excerpts:

“I worked in five presidential campaigns for Republicans and helped elect Republican senators and governors in more than half of the country. For decades, I made ads attacking the Democratic Party. But in all those years, I never saw anything as ridiculous as the push, in the aftermath of last week’s debate, to replace Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee. For many in the party, the event raised genuine concerns about the incumbent’s fitness for a new term. But a president’s record makes a better basis for judgment than a 90-minute broadcast does. Biden has a capable vice president, should he truly become unable to serve. The standard for passing over Democratic voters’ preferred nominee should be extraordinarily high.”

“The fundamental danger of Donald Trump is that he’s an autocrat who refuses to accept the will of the voters. So, the proper response is to throw out millions of votes, dump the overwhelming choice, and replace him with someone selected by a handful of insiders? What will the message be: “Our usurper is better than your usurper”?

“What is it about the Democratic Party that engenders this kind of self-doubt and fear? At a moment when Democrats’ instinct should mirror what Biden declared in a rally the day after the debate—“When you are knocked down, you get back up”—some in the party are seized by the urge to run, not fight. Think about how this would look: Hey, I guess Donald Trump is right; our guy isn’t fit to be president. We’ll give it another shot. Trust us, we’ll get it right eventually.”

“Madness.”

“After decades of losing the image wars as Republicans positioned themselves as the “party of strength,” Democrats are on the verge of a historic self-redefinition. When Biden traveled to Ukraine, he became the first president to visit an allied war zone not controlled by U.S. troops. A Democratic speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, defied China and visited Taiwan. A Republican Party that was once defined by Ronald Reagan demanding “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall” is now the beating heart of the pro–Vladimir Putin movement, led by a former president elected with the Russian dictator’s help.”Project 2025: Video Gallery | Know Your Meme

“For generations, Republicans succeeded in labeling Democrats the “blame America first” party. Today, it’s the Republican nominee who calls America a “third-world nation.”  Republicans used to describe Democrats as “victim shoppers” who always hold others at fault instead of accepting personal responsibility. Donald Trump sees America as a nation of victims, with powerful forces taking advantage of our weakness. As president, Trump labeled Canada a national-security threat. Really?

“Given a huge opportunity to project more self-assurance than Trump’s Republicans, these Dump Biden Democrats would ensure that their party once again slips back into the quicksand of doubt and second-guessing. No major American political party has thrown a presidential nominee overboard, so leave it up to some geniuses in the Democratic Party to hatch a scheme to make history.”

“What makes them believe that replacing Biden increases the chances of defeating Trump? How many times have candidates with impressive state-level records crashed and burned in a presidential race? The last time a party held on to the White House without the benefits of incumbency was 36 years ago. Recent polls show none of the fantasy replacement Democrats beating Trump. There are polls showing Biden defeating Trump. Say what you will about the Biden campaign’s organization, but four years ago it defeated an incumbent president—no easy thing.”

“Clearly, something was off inside the Biden campaign that allowed this debate debacle to occur, starting with the choice even to debate Trump. The Biden team easily could have insisted, as a precondition for a debate, that Trump first publicly acknowledge that he is running against a legally elected president who won a fair vote. Also, why did Biden look like an undertaker had done his makeup? But those breakdowns do not negate the substantial evidence that the Biden campaign knows how to defeat Trump. Do Democrats really want to throw that aside and reconstruct a campaign from scratch months before an existential election?”

“Trump is the candidate of chaos, uncertainty, and erratic behavior. Democrats can win a race against him by offering Americans the opposite: steady, calm, and confident leadership. Joe Biden has provided that. His record is arguably the most impressive of any first-term president since World War II. My advice to Democrats: Run on that record; don’t run from one bad debate. Show a little swagger, not timidity. Forget all this Dump Biden nonsense and seize the day.”

  1. Hi Grondw,
I have a very serious question (or three) I need to ask, and then I never want to hear about “ageism” in reference to Joe Biden again:

Given the structure of the debate, with Trump able to lie Willy-Nilly with only Biden to try to contest Trump’s lies on his own, making it seem Trump was speaking truth, would a compos-mentis fully awake and aware Joe Biden have fared any better in this scandalous pretence of a debate than a “Sleepy” Joe managed to do?

This was not a debate under any definition of that word, it was an “ambush” designed to make Trump look good and Biden to look bad. There was no way Biden could do anything but attack Trump on his many obvious lies, and not have time to say anything positive about his own policies. I don’t know how it was decided Trump would speak first, but he was allowed to go on the offensive, which automatically would have put Biden on the defensive, even if he was fully himself that night? What would this debate have looked like if Biden had been allowed to speak first?
This begs me to ssk the question, was Biden drugged prior to his his turn to speak? Whatever he ate before the television cameras were turned on, or possibly even in the water he drank during Trump’s rant, was there a sedative intentionally added that would cause him to slur his words, and stop him from thinking at lightning speed? Would his people really have allowed him to go on television if he was feeling so tired he could not think? That makes no sense to me!
Would anyone have checked his food or drink prior to turning the cameras on him? This idea only occurred to me in retropspect of what happened. It seems suspicious on that night of all nights when Biden had to be at his best, on that one particular night he was at his worst! Why?

But even if he wasn’t drugged, even if he was fully awake, he would have lost this war of worde. No, everything about this event smells rotten to me, and Biden walked right into, like a lamb to the slaughter. And he got slaughtered!

    • Hi!

I’m livid over the way President Biden is being treated with such disrespect for someone who’s done an admittedly outstanding job for past 3 1/2 years. A 90-minute debate flop doesn’t negate this reality.

The piling up by the punditry class is taking a toll and recent polls reflect this. It’s so unfair.

Trump would pummel each one of those judgmental pundits with his bullying debate style, and none of them would feel they were treated fairly.

I’m afraid politics doesn’t make room for fair play.

      • Gronda,

My most recent post is about the debate. The first thing I noticed is that CNN has sound engineers, but they failed to increase the volume on President Biden’s microphone. Also, with the third question, Jake Tapper told Trump that he wanted him to respond to his follow-up question and then he could use his minute to say whatever he wanted. Thus, Tapper gave Trump the go-ahead to not respond to Biden’s answer but rather, go into lying diatribes. Trump exploited that and did that for the rest of the debate.

The third thing I noticed is that CNN violated their own rules and failed to turn-off Trump’s microphone during the golf subject. Trump interrupted Biden and CNN did not allow him his full-minute, giving Trump opportunity to say his “child” accusation about Biden’s behavior.

I also edited the debate tape, removing Trump and leaving only President Biden’s statements. If I remember correctly, Biden only made 2 gaffs. He answered the moderators’ questions.

I also asked if readers would conduct their own test. The candidates were given one minute to respond or rebut. With the third question, Trump said 10 lies, 4 of them being personal attacks against President Biden. It was at the last 5 seconds of the minute that Biden attempted to get in a full-sentence — Tapper cut him off. So I asked if readers could respond to Trump’s lies in one minute and if rushing to finish in the last 5 seconds, lose track of Trump’s lies and what they were saying.

        • This debate was an ambush in so many ways. And the media follow-up after the debate was part of the ambush. It worked out perfectly for the Republicans — TOO PERFECTLY!
IF there is any truth to the polls (I myself do not believe them!) I will.lose respect for a great part of American voter collective. If I, a Canadian, can see through all the bullshit, why can’t they!
I do not want to sound mean, buti f the majority of the American people vote out democracy they deserve what they get. Too bad they will take down everyone else with them!

        • Hi Xena,

You make some really great points about the debate format placing Biden at a distinct disadvantage. The folks piling on about the Biden’s ageism issues would also be pummeled by Trump’s debate style just has he’s made roadkill of numerous other debate opponents. I would love for them to try your experiment.

There’re so many issues regarding this debate fiasco, I don’t know where to begin. First Biden was obviously exhausted and feeling ill. Why wasn’t this debate not canceled?

Then instead of a lot of youngsters overly prepping him for hours with data, they should have focused simply on training him how to effectively use the microphone and to let him be himself, instead of him trying to recall and spout out all the data he was fed, a waste of time with an opponent like Trump.

Finally, it’s become obvious that this TV debate format with no real time fact checking is far from being the optimum way for viewers/ voters to decide who’s the best person to fill the US top job.

          Hugs, Gronda
