Republican conservatives are at it again. They are spreading “fake news” about the widow Myeshia of the hero Sgt. La David Johnson who was slain on October 4, 2017 in Niger, when a military convoy with US and Nigerian military personnel were ambushed by a band of militants.

The right is alleging that Mrs. Johnson turned on her long-time family friend US Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL) by discounting her version of how the republican President Donald J. Trump treated  her, during a phone call placed on the speaker option on the 17th of October, while the family was en-route by limo to view their loved one’s casket as it was being delivered at Dover AFB.”

Here is the rest of the story…

On October 21, 2017, Arturo Garcia of penned the following report, “Did Myeshia Johnson Accuse Rep. Frederica Wilson of Using Her Husband ‘As a Political Platform’?” (“An alleged Facebook post from the widow about a controversial condolence call was “published” at least an hour before President Donald Trump phoned her.”)

“Gold Star widow Myeshia Johnson criticized Rep. Frederica Wilson on Facebook for misrepresenting the content of a condolence call from President Donald Trump.”

“Conservative social media users circulated an image of a purported Facebook post from 17 October 2017 which they said showed Gold Star widow Myeshia Johnson accusing Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Florida) of exploiting a presidential condolence call over the death of her husband, U.S. Army Sgt. La David Johnson, for political gain:”

The picture allegedly depicts a post from Myeshia Johnson’s Facebook page dated “17 October 2017 at 3:27 p.m.” saying:

I want to set the record straight! I’m getting sick and tired of this so called politician using my husband as a political platform. Even buy [sic] her own words she did not hear all of the conversation she only heard part of it. This is what actually was said. “They know the risk, they know what they sign up for but they still volunteer to put their lives on the line for their fellow Americans. We owe them a debt that can never be repaid”

A phone call from President Donald Trump to Johnson is at the center of what has become a public dispute between Johnson and the Trump administration.

“While the date of the post corresponds with that of the 17 October 2017 condolence call, the time listed is actually more than an hour before the reported time of President Trump’s phone call, which was 4:45 p.m. Eastern time.”

“La David Johnson was killed while serving in Niger on 4 October 2017, in what has been described as an ambush by Islamic insurgents. Three other U.S. service members, Staff Sgt. Bryan C. Black, Staff Sgt. Jeremiah W. Johnson, and Staff Sgt. Dustin M. Wright, were also killed in the attack, as were four Nigerien troops.”

“Rep. Wilson said she was riding with the Army sergeant’s widow and members of her family to receive his body when the President called, telling CNN host Don Lemon that night:”

“I heard what [Trump] said because the phone was on speaker. Basically he said, “Well, I guess he knew what he signed up for, but I guess it still hurt.” That’s what he said.”

“Wilson accused Trump of being insensitive not only to La David Johnson’s family but “to the family of every soldier that has paid the ultimate price for our freedom.”

“The sergeant’s mother, Cowanda Jones-Johnson, has corroborated Wilson’s account of the phone call, saying that “President Trump did disrespect my son and my daughter and also me and my husband.”

President Trump responded by denying what Rep. Wilson had claimed:

I didn’t say what that congresswoman said. Didn’t say it all. She knows it. I had a very nice conversation with the woman, with the wife who was — sounded like a lovely woman. Did not say what the congresswoman said, and most people aren’t too surprised to hear that.

“But while President Trump suggested he had proof to support his account of events, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that the call had not been not recorded. Instead, Sanders said, Chief of Staff Gen. John Kelly and other White House staff members were near President Trump when he phone Myeshia Johnson and heard what he said.”

“For his part, Kelly called Wilson an “empty barrel” and accused her of taking credit in 2015 for the funding of a Federal Bureau of Investigation field office in Miami, a claim that was debunked by footage of Wilson’s remarks that was posted online on 20 October 2017.”

Despite Sanders’ statement that the president’s conversation with Myeshia Johnson was not recorded, Lara Trump, the president’s daughter-in-law and host of a Facebook  broadcast devoted to what his administration calls “real news,” asserted on 20 October 2017 that she had read a transcript of the call which confirmed Trump spoke the words in question, albeit with additional context:

[Trump] said, “Your husband went into battle, you know, knowing that he could be injured, knowing that he could be killed, and he still did it because he loved this country, and he did it for the American people.”

Wilson came under additional criticism after she responded to Kelly’s allegations by exclaiming that “You mean to tell me that I’ve become so important that the White House is following me and my words? This is amazing. That’s amazing. I’ll have to tell my kids that I’m a rockstar now.”

Two days earlier, Rep. Wilson had issued a statement reading:

Despite President Trump’s suggestion that I have recanted my statement or misstated what he said, I stand firmly by my original account of his conversation with Myeshia Johnson, the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson. Moreover, this account has been confirmed by family members who also witnessed Mr. Trump’s incredible lack of compassion and sensitivity.

The Johnson family and the families of the three other soldiers who tragically lost their lives in the Niger ambush are experiencing what I am certain must feel like an unbearable loss. Rather than engage in a petty war of words with Mr. Trump, it is so much more important to embrace and support the families and honor these fallen heroes.

  1. I feel sorry for Myeshia Johnson, and her family. Their loss which should be a private time to grieve, has become a dog and pony show for the public to deflect the fact that the MITWH has no sensitivity with his words. Communication skills should be a high requirement for presidents. I doubt that Lord Chaos could pass an English proficiency exam!

    • Dear Colettebytes,

I agree that Myeshia Johnson should be allowed to grieve in peace.

The president has acted less than presidential in his treatment of Myeshia Johnson, a grieving pregnant widow with 2 little ones. She was not treated with the consideration that a Gold Star family member deserves.

The president would not pass a psychological exam. He has bragged about his high IQ. He is wealthy but he is deficient in demeanor, temperament, decency, character, integrity, etc.

      Hugs, Gronda

  2. Now I’m wondering who on earth sent that false so-called FB comment from the widow of Sergeant La David Johnson. This mess is all so wrong and hurtful to the grieving family and their supporting friends. 😦 — Suzanne

    • Dear Suzanne,

I would love to know who was the creator of this “fake news” on Facebook. President Trump could have easily diffused any misunderstanding by simply calling back Myeshia Johnson to apologize for his in-artful handling of sending his condolences to her, her family and friends.

This is shocking. Myeshia Johnson is granting an interview on one of the morning TV shows but I don’t know which one.

      Hugs, Gronda

  3. Gronda, it has only heightened under Trump, who lies 69% of the time as President, giving him credit for partial truths in the 31%. I left the GOP over ten years ago for three principal reasons, one of which is the tendency to make things up. When I hear both sides do it, that is true, but the GOP will tell ten lies to every one of the Democrats. Fox News, aided and abetted by radio shock jocks, made truth a commodity, ignoring it when it did not serve their purpose.

The other two reasons for my departure was the lying about climate change and the unhealthy embrace of the evangelical and gun issues. Keith

    • Dear Keith,

The only plus with all that is happening in the president’s reality show is that the lies against Rep. Frederica Wilson are not sticking. She has received ample coverage exposing the republicans lies. This is reflecting poorly on the republican party, the president and General Kelly.

The same happened with the 11 yr. old cub scout, Ames Mayfield.who was kicked out of his cub scout den by republicans. Their abominable behavior is now reflecting poorly on republican adults who mistreated this young man.

The republican party is creating an image of being mean, greedy, and not truthful.

      Hugs, Gronda

      • Gronda, when someone lies to cover up lies that cover up another lie, it does begin to unravel. The MITWH has a recurring habit of changing his story, sometimes more than once. He cannot take criticism and he cannot and will not admit mistakes. When those two negative traits collide, lies abound. It is that simple.

He does it more than most and, per Politifacts, laps the field in lying. But, he did not invent lying. I have seen footage of both former Speaker John Boehner and Senate Leader Mitch McConnell say climate change is real and man-influenced and we need to do something about it. This was around 2008 about the same time former Speaker Newt Gingrich said he was wrong about climate change. Now all three have reverted to earlier positions based on fossil fuel funding of their campaigns.

I mention this climate change example as this is one of the top two long term risks to our planet (the other is the global water crisis) and neither issue is discussed from a planning standpoint and the MITWH is pretending climate change does not matter. Keith

        • Dear Keith,

They changed their thinking as republican legislators became beholden to the Koch brothers’ fossil fuel monies. The sin of greed took over and then the lies followed.

          Hugs, Gronda

        • They are definitely beholden to others. We can throw the NRA in the same mix with the Koch Brothers. It is amazing how logical debate and decision-making is replaced with accusations that the other side is anti-American or against jobs or the Second Amendment. It would be funny, if it were not so sad.

  4. This whole affair is starting to take on the odor of racial bias. In the state this young woman is in I hope someone goes with her for support, perhaps a lawyer. I don’t trust many of the conservative Republicans any farther than I’d be able to throw them. I especially don’t trust Fox News. —- Suzanne

    • Dear Suzanne,

The president’s racial bias is showing. He treated the Khans, another Gold Star family with disrespect, like he is doing with Myeshia Johnson. These are two families of color.

The president acting poorly does not surprise me. What does bother me is that General Kelly appearing to emulating his boss instead of vice-versa.

      Hugs, Gronda
