Dear NFL Owners,
The republican President Donald J. Trump’s recent racist actions towards the migrant refugees seeking asylum in our once great country, the USA, was not his first foray into throwing fuel into the culture war fires blazing around all of us.
“We the people” have stood up to call foul and to douse some waters on the flames of hate on display by those who fear diversification of the US culture with peoples of different colors, religions, nationalities and backgrounds. Most of us celebrate this reality because we recognize that this is what the American experiment is all about, and that this is what makes this country that “shining city on a hill” as described by President Ronald Reagan.
As per a June 2018 Gallup Poll, “A record-high 75% of Americans, including majorities of all party groups, think immigration is a good thing for the U.S. — up slightly from 71% last year. Just 19% of the public considers immigration a bad thing.”
Many of us have been decrying how the president has been stoking the culture wars and the racist impulses of many of his followers as a way to cater to his base of voters.
By playing the role of the pied piper, the president has been able to drum up his supporters’ rage as when he pointed to your NFL football stars, accusing them of being unpatriotic because they dared to respectfully kneel during the singing of the National Anthem before the games. This was their way to draw attention to the alarming number of unarmed peoples of color who are being unnecessarily maimed and killed by some police officers. Instead of the president recognizing their pain, he accused them of demonstrating contempt for the USA and a whole lot worse.
What’s worse is that the you, as the NFL owners bought hook-line and sinker his racist, divisive song and you appeased the Bully-in-Chief living in the White House with your latest compromise ruling of not allowing the players to kneel but to remain in the lockers until the ending of the singing of the “National Anthem” before the games begin.
You didn’t learn the truth behind how the quarterback Colin Kaepernick arrived at the decision to kneel as a respectful way to protest until much later.
All of you owe Colin Kaepernick and all the football heroes who dared to kneel, an apology, and in the case of Colin Kaepernick, you all owe him, restitution.
You cannot let the likes of President Donald Trump further divide this country.
This is the same president who just ordered the separation of children from their parents, who as refugees were seeking asylum at the southwest US border. This new immigration “zero tolerance” policy was started by President Donald Trump via his Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ memo, dated April 6, 2018.
The president’s cabinet members and spokespeople were announcing that if refugees did not enter at designated US points of entry, there was the -0- tolerance rule in play, where every parent would be detained and prosecuted for a misdemeanor. It was at this point that the children were forcibly separated from their Moms and Dads for indeterminate periods of time.
As per Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), the president could have ended this practice of separating children from the parents with one phone call at any time. Directing the migrants to apply for asylum at the US designated points of entry was not a realistic plan as most refugees were being turned away at these designated points. There are numerous documented stories detailing how peoples have been waiting for weeks to gain entry as well as instances where children were still being forcibly separated from their parents, even at these points of entry.
But this time “we the people” stood up and made the president fold with his lousy hand of cards. We informed ourselves of numerous credible studies proving that the percentage of immigrants who become criminals is much less than that of the already existing population, and that those in the immigrant community access government programs much less than American citizens. We did not let the president get away with conflating crying children with criminals, rapists and MS-13 gang members.
We figured out that the President’s new immigration protocol enacted on April 6, 2018 was based on the myth that there was an immigration crisis, but the president was forced to end parts of it on the 20th of June 2018, due to public outrage.
As NFL owners, is this the president you want to appease?
