In the era of the republican US President Donald Trump reign, it didn’t take long before N Korea and its leader Kim Jong Un’s threat to launch missiles in the direction of Guam in response to the president’s saber rattle-ling rhetoric towards N. Korea, was no longer headline news.

Fortunately, it appears that the behind the scenes negotiations among the US Defense Secretary General James Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Chinese leaders have had some effect in tamping down N. Korea’s leader need to demonstrate its military prowess.

On August 14, 2017, Jonathan Cheng of the Wall Street Journal penned the following report, “North Korea Backs Off Guam Missile-Attack Threat.”

“North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has decided not to launch a threatened missile attack on Guam, Pyongyang’s state media reported on Tuesday, but warned that he could change his mind “if the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions.”

“(A) report, published early Tuesday (8/15/17), could help dial back tensions that had spiraled last week following an exchange of threats between North Korea and U.S. President Donald Trump.”

“Mr. Trump warned Pyongyang last week that the U.S. military was “locked and loaded” and could engulf the North in “fire and fury,” while North Korea, through its state media, had threatened to fire four missiles in a bid to surround the U.S. territory of Guam in “enveloping fire.”

“North Korean state media said in its report Tuesday that Mr. Kim had made his decision not to fire on Guam after visiting a military command post and examining a military plan presented to him by his senior officers.”

“While Mr. Kim said he had decided not to launch the attack on Guam yet, he advised the U.S. “to take into full account” whether the current standoff was to its benefit. He also said it was incumbent on the U.S. to “stop at once arrogant provocations against the DPRK and unilateral demands and not provoke it any longer,” using an abbreviation for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the formal name for North Korea.”

“If the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions on the Korean Peninsula and in its vicinity, testing the self-restraint of the DPRK, the [North] will make an important decision as it already declared,” the report quoted Mr. Kim as saying.”

“In Guam, authorities welcomed the apparent lifting of the missile threat from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.”

“We are happy that the rhetoric has calmed down, that he won’t be pursuing his threats to fire missiles at Guam,” said Lt. Gov. Ray Tenorio. “The comments allay some of the concerns and the fears.”

“The U.S. military on Guam would maintain a high level of readiness to respond to any threat, said Greg Kuntz, deputy public affairs officer for Joint Region Marianas.”

“Guam is home to two major U.S. military bases. The island is situated roughly 3,800 miles west of Hawaii and 2,100 miles south-southeast of Pyongyang.”

  1. I know…whoever does his hair better be sure he likes it. 🙂 Fortunately Kim Jong In was just rattling some sabers himself, and obviously enjoying teasing Trump, until China told them to knock it off. Probably Russia told them to cool it, too. Common sense tells us that Kim Jong In is fully aware of his position and what he is doing, I think he wants the nuke capability mostly as a precaution against US domination over there. It’s a mistake to take the political scene over there at face value.

    • Kim Jong Un is not crazy or stupid, as the West makes him out to be. He saw what happened to Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Venezuela regarding regime change. So a bit of preemptive saber rattling is called for to keep the monster at bay.
      N. Korea has no effective nuclear capability, but that’s not going to stop him from firing a few rockets from time to time. It’s best not to play into hands of the US, lest Trump lets loose with his twitchy (tweeting) fingers.

    • Dear Gradmama,

Let’s just say that there is no way Kim Jong Un would have backed down without some bigger guys sitting on him and explaining the real world to him. He does respond to fear.

I agree that he is not crazy but he is looking to protect his country. He has seen how other leaders have been treated who have given up their nuclear capabilities at the behest of US demands.

      Hugs, Gronda

      • yes, except that not backing down would have meant wreaking terrible destruction on his own country, along with Japan, etc. He well understands the real world…he’s trying to establish that he realizes full well what would happen if he actually attacked anyone.

      • no, he isn’t crazy. But central to the demonization of our enemies is to paint them as being “crazy.” Caricatures are always less threatening if they are belittled and cartooned.
