It looks good. It sounds great. Now, let’s see if this news story is for real. It appears that the republican President Donald Trump and the Democratic leaders of the US Congress, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) may have negotiated a deal to save DACA ( the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program) and ACA (the Affordable Care Act/ Obamacare).

Here’s the rest of the story…

On September 13, 2017, Ed O’Keefe and David Nakamura of the Washington Post penned the following report, “Trump, top Democrats agree to work on deal to save DACA.”

Excerpts:

“President Trump and top Democratic leaders late Wednesday (9/13/17) agreed to work out an agreement that would protect the nation’s “dreamers” from deportation and enact border security measures that don’t include building a wall, according to people familiar with the meeting.”

“The president discussed the deal during a dinner at the White House with Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). The meal included Chinese food and chocolate pie.”

“In a statement, the White House described the meeting as “constructive” and that it focused on “tax reform, border security, DACA, infrastructure and trade.”

“But aides familiar with the exchange said that Trump and the party leaders agreed to move quickly on legislation to protect the roughly 690,000 people protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program that is set to expire in June.”

“In a statement, Schumer and Pelosi said they had “a very productive meeting at the White House with the President. The discussion focused on DACA. We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides.”

They said the dinner also focused on ensuring that the administration works to shore up the Affordable Care Act in the coming weeks.”

“Earlier Wednesday, Trump had told a bipartisan group of House lawmakers during a White House meeting that he wants to resolve the DACA issue “real soon,” according to Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Tex.), who attended.”

“Cuellar said that he told Trump the Dream Act has sufficient bipartisan support to pass and that the White House should be pushing for a vote.”

“Trump, Cuellar said, told the group: “Oh, it will be on the floor.”

“Even if the president and Democratic leaders claim to cut a deal, it will need the support of GOP leaders, who are already wary of the spending agreement Trump brokered with them last week.”

“Pelosi and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (D-Wis.) met earlier Wednesday to begin discussing the broad parameters of the forthcoming immigration debate. Ryan’s team signaled that despite the administration’s eagerness to quickly seal the deal, it will take awhile.”

“AshLee Strong, Ryan’s spokeswoman, said that regarding the plight of the dreamers, the speaker “reiterated that any solution needs to address border security and enforcement, which are the root causes of the problem. Discussions among the Republican conference will continue in the coming weeks.”

  1. Can a man who has made at least a thousand mistakes and mis-speaks in the past seven months suddenly be redeemed by a single correct move? No. Do I trust him? No. I strongly suspect a hidden agenda, motives that we will see soon enough. The term ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ comes to mind. A cynic? Yes, I admit that I am, but I have seen Trump in action and I know all too well what to expect. Hugs!!! Good to see you back in the saddle!

    • Dear Jill,

This is like someone trying to make a deal with the Devil. You have to know that you cannot accept anything that’s said at face value.

In this case, seeing is believing.

I am not fully back yet, but life has become somewhat normal again.

      • Yes, seeing is believing. I understand his base is quite upset with him, and he told them not to worry, that the wall would be built, just a little later than planned. I suspect he is trying to raise his poll numbers and I sincerely hope democrats are smart enough not to fall for his line of …

  2. Gronda, let’s hope something happens. There are two related issues driving this – fear and ego. On the fear side, he feels his days may be numbered, so if he befriends the Dems, then maybe they will be tolerable of his likely collusion and obstruction. On the ego side, he realizes now that the John Boehner approach of getting substantive legislation passed was more doable working with the Dems and the more moderate Republicans. He sees a GOP that cannot function, so he is going down the purple path to accomplish something, anything. And, since he is man of little conviction, what is accomplished is less relevant than the count. Keith

    • Dear Keith,

Frankly, I hope he takes the “purple route.” This way, we have at least temporarily, prevented a debt ceiling crisis and a possible government shutdown. If both DACA and the ACA are saved, I can live with these results. I am more than happy to put a win for the American peoples on DDT’S board.

      Hugs, Gronda

      • And, I am all for intelligent investment in infrastructure. The Dems said they would work with him on this from the outset. If Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell had governed toward a 60 vote threshold in the Senate, they would have been more bipartisan from the outset. This was a strategic and tactical mistake on their part.
