We all know that the republican President Donald Trump is truth challenged. His defenders have a reflexive response, the other guy did it too, or in this case, past presidents lied also.
The NY Times set out to compare the number of outright lies between President Trump and the former Democratic President Barack Obama. Here’s the rest of the story…
On December 14, 2017, David Leonhardt, Ian Prasad Philbrick and Stuart A. Thompson of the New York Times penned this opinion piece, “Trump’s Lies vs. Obama’s”
Excerpts:
“After we published a list of President Trump’s lies this summer, we heard a common response from his supporters. They said, in effect: Yes, but if you made a similar list for previous presidents, it would be just as bad.”
“We’ve set out to make that list. Here, you will find our attempt at a comprehensive catalog of the falsehoods that Barack Obama told while he was president. “
“We applied the same conservative standard to Obama and Trump, counting only demonstrably and substantially false statements. The result: Trump is unlike any other modern president. He seems virtually indifferent to reality, often saying whatever helps him make the case he’s trying to make.”
“In his first 10 months in office, he has told 103 separate untruths, many of them repeatedly. Obama told 18 over his entire eight-year tenure. That’s an average of about two a year for Obama and about 124 a year for Trump.”
“Separately, we have updated our earlier list of Trump’s lies, which also includes repeated falsehoods. This article counts only distinct falsehoods for both Trump and Obama.”
“If we had used a less strict standard, Trump would look even worse by comparison. He makes misleading statements and mild exaggerations – about economic statistics, his political opponents and many other subjects – far more often than Obama. We left out any statement that could be plausibly defended even if many people would disagree with the president’s interpretation. We also left out modest quantitative errors, such as Trump’s frequent imprecision with numbers.”
“We have used the word “lies” again here, as we did in our original piece. If anything, though, the word is unfair to Obama and Bush. When they became aware that they had been saying something untrue, they stopped doing it.”
“When he is caught lying, he will often try to discredit people telling the truth, be they judges, scientists, F.B.I. or C.I.A. officials, journalists or members of Congress. Trump is trying to make truth irrelevant. It is extremely damaging to democracy, and it’s not an accident. It’s core to his political strategy.”
“As for Obama: His falsehoods tended to be attempts to make his own policies look better or to overstate a problem he was trying to solve.”
“Over all, Obama rarely told demonstrable untruths as president. And he appears to have become more careful over time. We counted six straight-up falsehoods in his first year in office. Across his entire second four-year term, we counted the same number, six, only one of which came in his final year in office.”
“In all, we found 18 different bald untruths from Obama during his presidency. Trump told his 18th separate untruth in his third full week in office, and his list keeps growing.”
“In fact, Trump tells falsehoods about Obama and his administration more often than Obama told falsehoods about all subjects.”
List of Lies

Gronda, this is yet another convincing piece that corroborates Trump’s lack of familiarity with the truth. 103 to 18, in one year no less. Mr. Trump – you are #1!!! When you add this to the piece by Politfacts that said Trump lied 69% as President and 70% as a candidate, it paints a more complete picture.
But this is not new. Five biographers and the ghost author of “The Art of the Deal,” all say Trump has a problem with the truth. Setting that aside, Thomas Wells, an attorney who worked with Trump, said Trump lies every day about things of no consequence.
When folks say all Presidents lie, they need to hear that Trump dwarfs them in lying. The 69% rate actually gives him credit for half-truths, which when included make the number 95%.
Finally, if people think this all is being unfair, Trump gave a deposition where the deposing attorney made him recant 30 lies in one testimony. I hope he is subpoened to testify to defend himself. Keith

Dear Keith,
These are facts and nothing but the facts. The problem with the liar -in-chief in the White House with his fellow republican sycophants in the WH and the US Congress is that I can take absolutely nothing that they say at face value. I have to ask, “Where’s the evidence? What’s the hard data showing.”
When the republican members of the House’s Judiciary Committee unfairly castigated the FBI recently and the Special Counsel Robert Mueller over the Trump-Russian investigation, they lost all my respect. I could never listen to folks who would be willing to sell their own mother for 30 pieces of silver. They are thrashing without merit the US premiere law enforcement agency that many peoples rely on for justice and fairness.

Gronda, maybe we just keep it simple with legislators and ask them “Is this the person you want to stake your reputation on?” And, if they do not have an answer, tell them to go ask their spouse. Keith

You are to be congratulated on your hard work in listing and cross-referencing.
The fellow shouldn’t even be allowed to serve in the most menial post in the Whitehouse staff, never mind be where he is now.

Fear Roger,
Thanks for your gracious feedback.
He is not acting alone. His republican sycophants in the WH and the US Congress are complicit in supporting him despises all his character flaws, which as you mentioned, should not qualify him to serve as dog-catcher.

Totally unbelievable that we have this liar in the Oval Office. These are the kinds of things that the Resistance has to keep in front of the public. Great post, Gronda!

Dear John Fioravanti,
What is worse, is that the republican sycophants in the US Congress are backing his “fake news” plays. This includes thrashing without merit the FBI to discredit its work product regarding the Trump/ Russian investigation. This coordinated republican attack on the FBI started right after it was publicly disclosed that the FBI was subpoenaing Deutsche Bank, which is the gateway to Trump’s Russian connections.
Their day of reckoning is coming and they don’t want to face the music.
Thanks a million times over for all of your support and for this reblog.

Thanks for the explanation. It is hard to imagine that a US administration has sunk so low and is supported in Congress. You’re welcome – happy to share your work, Gronda. Hugs!

Gronda Morin has presented a comprehensive report that documents the outright lies told by Donald Trump in his first ten months in office. It also compares his lies to Obama’s. This is extremely well done!

Dear Mz. Gronda,
What is so disgusting is that had more people actually taken the time to look at this (alleged) persons past history, they would not have been surprised at what he would be like as a leader. His whole life has been filled with drama and scandal, why does it surprise anyone that it has continued, admittedly at a larger scale, but still continues as of this morning in his remarks to the press prior to his attendance at the FBI convention. Excellent work at providing this article for us to ponder!

Dear Crustyolemothman,
The sad truth is that a lot of folks had heard about President’s shortcomings but like a lot of fools in love, they thought he would change by becoming presidential. They had yet to live with the fellow where they have no choice but to accept that the reality had nothing to do with the promise/ the illusion.
What’s sad, is that we are paying the price for their foolishness.

Dear Horty,
President Donald Trump and his sycophants republicans in the WH and in the US Congress must be suffering from delusions if they think they have the vast majority of folks snowed where we don’t know that they are knee deep in the manure of all their lies like:
“We want to save Obamacare; the 2017 tax cut bill benefits mostly the middle/ poor class; they promise to fix-all the tax cuts for the middle/ poor class when they start expiring from 2019-2025; this tax cut will pay for itself with economic growth in the form of additional revenues; this tax cut bill is going to significantly increase the number of living wage jobs and workers will start seeing bigger pay checks.
This is a nightmare!

Dear Ravenhawks’ magazine,
Thanks a million times over for all of your support and for this reblog. We can never take this high level of “fake news” and outright lies as being a new normal.
Folks need to be able to count on our representatives to be able to tell the difference between truth-telling and habitually stretching it to outright lying.
We have a right to expect better than what we have been observing in the US Congress and the WH.
