aside Dear Republicans, Stop Your Outright Lying About Military Pay During Shutdown

Talk about Hutzpah! The US House leader Paul Ryan just had the nerve to lie about how the democrats with their shutdown are at fault for military members not getting paid. This talking point that has been shared by republicans during the Sunday TV news talking shows, belies the C-Span 2 video gone viral where the Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri offers the motion to continue to pay our military personnel on time as was done during the 2013 government shutdown but the US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell shut her down faster than a speeding bullet. (See: Transcript: House Speaker Paul Ryan on “Face the Nation,” Jan. 21/ CBS News …)

For these same republicans, it was more important that they keep their talking point to claim that democrats were at fault for military not getting their pay on a timely basis during the government shut down, than for them to do the right thing to make sure they received their pay as was done in 2013.

Then the House Speaker Paul Ryan tried to claim that the Democratic President Barack Obama delayed pay to the military during the previous 2013 government shut down when he knows better. He voted for the legislation that President Obama signed to make sure that our military men and women did not lose out on their pay.

How are democrats in the US Congress able to rely on republican leaders keeping their word when they are capable of bold faced lying to the American peoples?

Here’s the rest of the story…On  January 21, 2018, Tommy Christopher of Share Blue Media penned the following report,  “Paul Ryan just claimed Obama delayed troop pay during 2013 shutdown. That’s a lie.”
“Donald Trump and the Republicans were out in force this weekend lying about the Trump shutdown, but House Speaker Paul Ryan made the extra effort to lie about the 2013 shutdown, as well.”

Even though Republicans blocked a Democratic resolution that would have protected military pay during the government shutdown, Trump administration officials like budget director Mick Mulvaney and Mike Pence tried to sell the notion that Democrats are at fault if service members don’t get paid.

Ryan peddled that lie as well in an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” Sunday morning, telling host John Dickerson that Democrats “filibustered” pay for the troops.

“The Democrats didn’t filibuster the payment for the troops separate and apart from —” Dickerson corrected Ryan, before Ryan cut him off.

“The bill we passed paid troops,” Ryan said, referring not to the Democratic resolution, but to the overall spending bill.

“No,” Ryan replied, “their pay gets deferred.”

That news would come as a surprise to Ryan himself, whose own government website still contains a “frequently asked questions” page on the 2013 shutdown, one of which is “Will members of the military be paid?”

Ryan’s page states, to this day, that, “On September 30th, the President signed H.R. 3210, the Pay Our Military Act, which ensures that our military personnel on active duty – including reserve component personnel on Federal active duty – continue to be paid through the shutdown.”

In fact, Ryan was among the members of the House who voted unanimously for the measure.

The same could be true of this shutdown, if Trump and the Republicans wanted it, and it isn’t just Democrats saying so. Stars and Stripes, the military paper of record, noted in an article on Sunday that members of the military “would be paid up to Feb. 1, and then continue on the job without getting paid until the shutdown ended or until Congress and the president agreed to cover their costs before it ended.”

President Obama cared enough to sign a law protecting military pay during the 2013 shutdown, and Paul Ryan apparently cared enough to vote for it.

Ryan’s willingness to lie about it now is further evidence that Republicans have sold their souls to enable Trump.

    • Dear Suzanne,

It only gets worse. VP Pence continued to lie when he was addressing our soldiers in Jordan. He is not supposed to be bring politics in this type of setting, Instead it is a time when leaders take time to thank them for their sacrifice and use words of encouragement to lift these soldiers hearts.

But VP Pence couldn’t stand not to use the talking point that the democrats in pushing for the shutdown were responsible for them not getting their pay. What VP Pence did not know, is that any soldier who has read any of the military newspapers like the “Stars and Stripes” knew that he was lying to them.

Thanks a million times over for your support and for this reblog.

  1. Unbelievable stuff and it just goes to show that the Republicans honestly think that the American public are stupid enough to accept their lies. Very sad. November is coming…

    • Dear John,

Yes, the Republicans hope that Americans are that stupid but they are not. Most Americans like people around the world, working and taking care of their families.

Despite busy lives, women went out in droves to march/ protest over the weekend. These women come in all colors, sexual preference, faiths, nationalities and party affiliations. They have one goal in common which is to oust President Trump and his sycophant republicans from their cushy jobs.

In short, peoples have been becoming more aware of the political environment which means tactics that have been effective in the past will carry blow back now when politicians act in duplicitous ways.
