The one true ‘national US crisis that’s not being addressed can be laid at the hands of the Republican Party President Donald Trump, his administration, his sycophantic GOP congressional legislators and his base of voters including GOP mega ‘dark money’ donors who would kill to keep their 2017 GOP tax cuts and regulation reforms; the anti-immigration zealots; Evangelicals as the anti-climate change science, anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ rights crowd; the racists which include those who are anti-Semitics and anti-Muslim: and the NRA second amendment ‘gun rights’ enthusiasts. These factions comprise a minority of US voters but they’re a significant force within the president’s GOP organization. They stick with President Trump like glue, as they’ve nowhere else to go.
It is not only the fossil fuel industry as ‘dark money’ GOP donors who are deliberately hindering the US from being a leader in the fight against aggressively dealing with the reality of the effects of climate change, but the White Evangelical community.

The White Evangelical rapture believing faction equals about 35% of the president’s cult-like base. Their beliefs include an abhorrence towards abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, the New World Order (NWO)/ international alliances, including the United Nations, global trade pacts, EU, NATO.
They also are staunch climate change deniers as they’re convinced that our earth was created for man’s use, and that environmentalism is a form of blasphemy.
This is where the alliance of the fossil fuel industry executives and the White rapture believing Evangelicals’ interests merge as they both are not moved by the reality of climate change and they both share the priority of placing conservative justices on the US Supreme Court and on the federal court benches as they are more likely to favor corporate interests and the Evangelicals’ desire to restrict the rights of women’s access to legal abortions and LGBTQ rights.
Meanwhile they are deliberately placing the US, its peoples and the world at serious risk of being harmed where even mitigation efforts will have only a minimum impact.
But there are signs of hope. The Democratic Party majority members in the House of the US Congress have already started to flex their muscles by holding hearings on February 6, 2019 regarding the issue of climate change.

As per a 2/7/19 EchoWatch report, “Both the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change and the Natural Resources Committee met Wednesday morning (2/6/19) to discuss the problem. Democratic California Representative Scott Peters tweeted it was the first Energy and Commerce hearing to focus on the issue in six years, while House Natural Resources Committee Chairman and Democratic Arizona Representative Raúl M. Grijalva said it was the first hearing on climate change in eight years, as CNN reported.”
“Today, we turn the page on this committee from climate change denial to climate action,” Grijalva said.”
“House Republicans participating in the hearings largely abandoned outright denial of climate science, E&E News reported.”
“When Colorado Democratic Representative Diana DeGette asked every witness called by both parties before the Environment and Climate Change Subcommittee if they believed the climate was changing primarily due to greenhouse gas emissions, they all said yes.”
“That in itself is a revolutionary step for this committee,” DeGette said, E&E News reported.”

Here is the rest of the story…
On February 6, 2019, Laura Geggel of Live Science penned the following report, “2018 Was 4th Hottest Year on Record, NASA Finds”
Excerpts:
“The (piping hot) numbers are in: 2018 was the fourth hottest year on record, according to two independent reports released today (Feb. 6) by NASA and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).”
“Last year was so hot that global land- and ocean-surface temperatures were 1.42 degrees Fahrenheit (0.79 degrees Celsius) above the 20th-century average, NOAA reported. Since 1880, when record-keeping began, only three years — 2016 (the highest, in part because of El Niño), 2015 and 2017 — were hotter.”
“The key message is that the planet is warming,” Gavin Schmidt, the director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City, told reporters at a news conference. “And our understanding of why those trends are occurring is also very robust. It’s because of the greenhouse gases that we[‘ve] put into the atmosphere over the last 100 years.” [6 Unexpected Effects of Climate Change]”
“The trend isn’t a new one. Nine of the 10 warmest winters have happened since 2005, and five of the warmest years on record happened within the last five years, or from 2014 to 2018.”
“Moreover, NASA and NOAA double-checked their work against the findings of other groups, including the United Kingdom’s Met Office and the World Meteorological Organization, which also ranked 2018 as the fourth warmest year on record.”
“There was record warmth (land and ocean temperatures) in much of Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, New Zealand and Russia, as well as in parts of the Atlantic and western Pacific oceans, Deke Arndt, chief of the monitoring section at NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information in Asheville, North Carolina, told reporters.”
“But it wasn’t sizzling everywhere. “The interior part of northern North America was on the cool side of recent history, particularly the prairie provinces of Canada,” Arndt said. That explains, in part, why 2018 was only among the top 20 warmest years for North America, he said.”
“Overall, the world over, both land and seas were hotter than average: The land was about 2.02 F (1.12 C) and the oceans were 1.19 F (0.66 C) warmer than the 20th-century average, NOAA found.”
“The area most impacted by climate change is the Arctic, which is warming between two and three times faster than the global average, Schmidt said.”
“We obviously are very concerned with what’s going on in the Arctic,” Schmidt said. “We have a large decrease in Arctic sea ice, particularly in the summer and in September, which is the minimum sea-ice period in the Arctic. But there are also decreases in the winter as well, but they are less pronounced.”
U.S. climate
“In the United States, 2018 was the 14th warmest of the 124 years on record, at least for the contiguous 48 lower states, Arndt noted. It was about 1.5 F (0.83 C) warmer than the 20th-century average. As you can see in the map below, the dark red areas had the warmest years on record; the orange areas had temperatures in the top 10 percent of their history; and areas with light orange had temperatures that were in the warmest third of their history, Arndt said.”
“Last year was also the third wettest year in the U.S. on record, Arndt said. Hawaii even set a record for the rainiest 24-hour period in U.S. history, when it rained 49.69 inches (126 centimeters) in Kauai from April 14–15, 2018. [The Weirdest Things That Fell From the Sky]”
“Meanwhile, severe drought lingered in the Four Corners region of the American Southwest. While this area has experienced drought in the past, climate change has made these droughts more intense, largely because the soil dries out more due to increasing temperatures, Schmidt said.”
“Extreme climate events have also taken a toll on the U.S. economy. There were 14 weather- and climate-related events that cost more than $1 billion in 2018, making it the fourth largest total on record since 1980. (The scientists adjusted for inflation, Arndt noted.) In total, these events, including hurricanes Florence and Michael, as well as the wildfires out West, cost $91 billion in direct losses, Arndt said.”
Double-checking data
“Climate scientists have taken many precautions to expel uncertainties from their data. For instance, they factored in whether methodologies had changed over the years, Schmidt said. What’s more, to avoid bias due to the so-called “urban heat island” effect, in which cities are warmer than surrounding areas, the agencies collect most of their data from rural areas; and if a station moves or the environment around it changes, scientists control for that, too, Schmidt said.”
“In addition, NASA satellites have been tracking climate data since 1979, which also serves as an outside check on data collected on Earth. These satellites show an indication that “the Arctic is warming more in the real world, according to satellite trends, than we are capturing in the station-based analysis,” Schmidt said.”

Another bright spot is Pelosi creating the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis. She just named the Democrats to the panel: https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/07/pelosi-climate-change-panel-1154847

Dear Tokyo Sand,
I’m thrilled that the House Speaker Pelosi is making ‘climate change her ‘flagship” political issue even before health care as this is the #1 existential threat to the world and this country. With the Democratic Party elected officials in charge of the US House, this subject will get the due diligence, it deserves.
Thanks a million for sharing the politico.com reference.

Gronda, we are beyond the bewitching hour and our former party has moved closer beyond poor stewardship to malfeasance. To be frank, with their stance on climate change, enabling polluters of the environment and making our debt worse, why a young person would vote for a party that is screwing them is beyond me.
Germany has more renewable energy than coal right now. They plan to be totally renewable energy powered in 2037. The US is pulling out the Paris Climate Change Accord, yet one more reason why the US should not be viewed as the leader of the free world.
I did see where the Democrat NC Governor and Republican Massachusetts Governor announced yesterday the need for the US to act on climate change.
Anyone in Florida (in addition to you ) reading this needs to pressure their two Senators and Governors to act. The Senators are particularly culpable on this issue. If nothing is done, Rubio and Scott will be Senators from Atlantis. Keith

PS – The evangelical mindset on the environment runs contrary to what two panel discussions with various religious espoused. The first panel was at a Sierra Club meeting and included a Catholic Priest, Jewish Rabbi and a Muslim Imam. The second panel was at a meeting of the Mecklenburg Ministries, an interfaith group. The panel included a Baptist Deacon, Avathic Priest, Jewish Rabbi and Muslm senior official.
In both meetings, the panel spoke of religious text where God/Allah spoke of followers to be good stewards of the earth. He gave people dominion over the animals, in part for this purpose.
So, when l head evangelicals say what you cited, I go back to these two panel discussions. Having also just watched “Religulous,” by Bill Maher, what some so called religious leaders said about what God and Jesus said was very interesting and not on the bible I read.

Addenda – that should say “Catholic Priest.”

Dear Keith,
This avoidance goes back to GOP ‘dark money’ donors’ some of whom represent the fossil fuel industry. This is why I want new finance laws where all donors have to be publicly identified which donate to political campaigns in any form.
The tie into the White Evangelical world dates back to 2006 when some honest brokers attempted to elevate the issue of climate change into being a threat that needed to be addressed, but they were outnumbered.
It’s the rapture believing Evangelicals who are believing that they are not to mess with GOD’s landscape which is real dumb thinking as the Human Beings have been messing with their environments, like forever.
This is the #1 existential threat to the planet’s well being and to ignore this reality, is to knowingly place our progeny in peril that could have been prevented. Those who back this denial of climate change ARE NOT reading the same bible that I do. THIS STANCE IS DEFINITELY NOT PRO-LIFE.
