As Of June 2019 House Speaker Pelosi Is Still Firm In Nixing House Commencement Of -I-Inquiry

According to Chris Matthews of the MSNBC TV Show which aired on 6/20/2019, Hardball,  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is now back to being more definitive about her stance to not grant the Democrats of  US House, the power to commence an impeachment inquiry, based on the compilation of crimes committed by the republican President Donald Trump, as alleged in the 3/22/2019 FBI’s final report regarding its 22 months long Trump-Russia probe, led by the Special Counsel Robert Mueller III.

For many of us who have studied the FBI’s Mueller report detailing in excruciating detail President Trump’s criminal enterprise that’s being run out of the White House, we see no option but to have the House honor its constitutionally mandated duty to commence an impeachment inquiry, as it’s the only government entity with the power between now and 2021 to be able to hold President Trump accountable for all of his felonious acts and to send a signal to the world that in this USA, no one is above the law.

SOME DEMS IN TRUMP DISTRICTS / Sources: 2018 House results are from official statewide sources and the Cook Political Report. 2016 presidential results by congressional district are from Daily Kos Elections.

The DCCC included 26 of the 31 Trump Democrats on its list of 44 “Frontline” Democrats it anticipates will have the most competitive races in 2020. But it’s my thinking that Speaker Pelosi may be buying time because she has to deal with 44 House Democrats from Trump leaning districts who aren’t all on-board with the -I-word. There are 235 Democrats in the House but she requires 218 House members to pass anything. There’s only one courageous GOP US House member Rep. Justin Amash who favors impeachment but there are now 3 Democrats who are from Trump-leaning districts who have publicly announced their approval.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee(DCCC) is the organization which designated 44 legislators who won in Trump districts, as key to holding on to the House in 2020.

So far there are 77 Democrats and 1 GOP member who are on board for impeachment. With 78 House members favoring an -I-inquiry, Speaker Pelosi needs 130 more to equal 218 for a win. Of the 41 out of 44 House members from Trump leaning districts, left, who don’t favor impeachment, 2 are potential yes votes, Rep. Donna Shalala of Florida and Rep. Mike Levine of California.  However a 6/21/2019 Politico report indicates that there are about 200 Democrats who are privately in favor of impeachment but they won’t go public yet, out of deference to the Speaker. This means that she’s close to or already has that magic number of 218 votes for passage.

If anyone knows how to count votes, the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has this art down to a science. I had theorized that perhaps the Speaker was avoiding impeachment because she was short some votes, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Laurence Tribe, the Harvard constitutional scholar tweeted the following:

. now seems to be saying that Trump’s obvious collusion with Russia’s attack on the 2016 election — and his corrupt efforts to prevent that collusion’s discovery — just aren’t impeachable offenses. If that’s her view, she’s all wrong. Dangerously wrong.

We will soon reach the point — if we haven’t already reached it — when those who oppose starting an will become complicit in the ongoing violation of our Constitution and the continuing endangerment of our national security. Please wake up and move!

As per an updated 6/20/2019 NPR report:

“This week, both California Democratic Rep. Katie Porter and Illinois Democratic Rep. Sean Casten publicly backed an impeachment investigation. Porter and Casten are two of just three House Democrats who represent competitive districts and are publicly backing impeachment of President Trump.”

“Rep. Tom Malinowski of NJ is the other so-called “Frontline” Democrat who says the House should launch an inquiry. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee designated 44 legislators whose districts are seen as key to holding on to the House in 2020.”

“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who has the most influential voice in the decision on whether to move forward, has repeatedly stated that she plans to focus on current congressional committee investigations into Trump before talking about an impeachment inquiry.”

  1. Hello Gronda. I know that Speaker Pelosi has to count votes. I also know trying to ram through an impeachment inquiry vote without enough support will be very damaging to the Democrats. However this standoff stance is hurting the Democrats badly. She needs a better messaging team and online presence. What she should be doing is hammering away what the reasons for impeachment are. That would get her the votes she needs. I hear many theories as to why she is waiting, some sort of secret devastating secret weapon against the Republicans. But the truth is we are losing in all media aspects. The more tRump and crew stops the House from investigating them, inventing new “total immunity” not legal reasons why they don’t have to answer questions just makes the Democrats look weak and ineffective. Polls show voter support for Democrats slipping badly. We can not keep taking these hits. I am not sure what the answer is, but this is a really losing strategy. Hugs

    • Dear Scottie,

I’m of the school of thought that a risk benefit analysis would show that the House Democrats not commencing the I inquiry is more of a risk than taking action. I really believe this.

I am worried that if Speaker Pelosi doesn’t commence the I inquiry by the end September 2019, she’ll be loosing out for several reasons. At some point she’s responsible for restoring people’s faith and trust in the ‘rule of law’ and that it’s possible to have an effective, well functioning government entity.

She” be taking away people’s hope to be a part of something better than what we’ve been experiencing.

Here’s President Trump who ordered an attack on Iran and then changed his mind while no one has a clue as to why that happened. He’s ordering ICE to wreck families this weekend. If this president isn’t subject to being impeached, than what is it for, and how can we hope to use this tool in the future if we don’t do something now.

      Hugs, Gronda
