aside Will The Real Hillary Clinton Please Stand UP? Part I

This is a repeat of an earlier work. Hillary Clinton is attempting to reemerge back into the fray. I want to challenge the right’s “fake news” campaign against her for over 30 years.

elections-dnc-hrs-and-obama-great-pix-10946891_what-was-obamas-speech-at-the-dnc-convention_456aba06_mFor the past eight years, I have been criticizing the republican party for turning a blind eye to those members in their ranks who spout racist falsehoods against President Barack Obama along the lines that he is Muslim who was really born in Kenya and thus, a fraud who hates America. This then explains why he is so apologetic for our mistakes and why he refuses to use the phrase, Islamic extremists.

These lies have been repeated so often that when CNN/ORC published the results of a survey of 1,012 adult Americans on 11/23/2015, it showed that the percentage of Republicans alone — 43 percent thought Obama is Muslim. This compared with 15 percent of Democrats and 29 percent of independents. According to a 9/14/15 Time Magazine article by Sam Frizell,“the latest poll shows that 20% of Americans believe Obama was born outside the United States, with 9% saying there is solid evidence to prove it and 11% saying it is just their suspicion.

Now, I have been hearing the chant that the current democratic presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton is a liar who needs to be locked up. Frankly, while racism is a pervasive part of the US culture, so is sexism/ misogyny. For over 35years, there has been a conservative republican led cottage industry established and designed to diminish the credibility and reputation of Mrs. Clinton. These folks have been at this endeavor for so long, that I began to wonder about how much of their animus and campaign of misinformation against Mrs. Clinton has been blindly accepted as gospel by a significant portion of the American public.

According to an August 2015 Quinnipiac national poll of more than 1500 registered voters, the most frequent words that came to mind when Americans described Hillary Clinton are  “liar” and “dishonest.” There were some positive words for Clinton mentioned frequently, including “experience” and “strong. On this basis, I decided to set out to do research on Mrs. Clinton, in order to determine what is truthful, factual and/ or fiction.

I started my investigation by reviewing her performance record while she was an elected official as the New York U.S. senator from 2001 to 2009. Those spouting the republican talking points are claiming that Mrs. Clinton only sponsored 3 pieces of legislation which became law. Remember that her service occurred during President Bush’s tenure.

Number one, Mrs. Clinton was re-elected to a second term as the NY U.S. senator where she won by 67% with stiff competition. The truth is that she co sponsored 74 bills and lots of amendments which became law. In short, she was not afraid to work across the aisle. Senators do more than pass legislation. They have to work with lots of constituents to help them obtain essential services by cutting through the cumbersome federal bureaucracy. They work at assisting others to negotiate deals, serving on committees, wording legislation just right, etc. After about a year into her service as a senator, a conservative reporter, Mark Halperin was looking to write a story as to how republican senators viewed her work. He asked several sources but he could not find one republican senator who would say anything negative. He found out that she was highly regarded by her fellow colleagues.

On 9/18/15, The Atlantic posted the following commentary about the democratic presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton: “Her colleagues in the Senate–many of whom were initially skeptical, viewing her as a celebrity politician on the make–tended to come away impressed with her commitment to low-profile but important issues and to keeping her head down and working with colleagues.”

clinton-htc-photo-in-tampa501688556_17917944_8col The 9/18/15 Atlantic article continued with the following narrative: “At the State Department, she focused on improving management and coordination, which was by many accounts badly needed.” Don’t forget that Mrs. Clinton left this position with a 69% approval rating.

On 6/12/16 Michael Arnovitz posted the following in his treatise, “Thinking About Hillary — A Plea for Reason:”

“Indeed, for a surprisingly large percentage of the electorate, the claim that Hillary is innately dishonest is simply accepted as a given. It is an accusation and conviction so ingrained in the conversation about her that any attempt to even question it is often met with shock. And yet here’s the thing: it’s not actually true. Politifact, the Pulitzer prize-winning fact-checking project, determined for example that Hillary was actually the most truthful candidate (of either Party) in the 2016 election season. And in general Politifact has determined that Hillary is more honest than most (but not all) politicians they have tracked over the years.”

. . .Also instructive is Jill Abramson’s recent piece in the Guardian. Abramson, a former reporter for the Wall Street Journal as well as former Executive Editor of the New York Times, had this to say about Hillary’s honesty: “As an editor I’ve launched investigations into her business dealings, her fundraising, her foundation and her marriage. As a reporter my stories stretch back to Whitewater. I’m not a favorite in Hillaryland. That makes what I want to say next surprising. Hillary Clinton is fundamentally honest and trustworthy.”. . .

As of 8/5/16, PolitiFact has found that 27% of Hillary Clinton’ statements, reviewed by them were mostly false or worse, compared with 70% for Donald Trump.

“PolitiFact determined that 2% of Mrs. Clinton’s statements were “pants on fire” lies compared to 19% for Mr.. Trump.”

“In conclusion, Mr. Kristof writes: Mr. Trump has 9 times the share of flat out lies as Mrs. Clinton does.”

elections-dnc-655802163aa00575-democraticThe Washington Post’s FactChecker has awarded its worst ranking of 4 Pinnochios to 16% for Mrs. Clinton’s statements that it checked versus 64% which were applied to Mr. Trump’s statements.

“Glenn Kessler of (FactChecker) says, Mrs. Clinton is the norm for a typical politician while Mr. Trump is off the charts.”

Is it simply coincidental that her high approval numbers while she is on the job, just happen to take a dive whenever she is seeking political office?
