This data about the US Senate members having passed a bill on the 16th of May 2018, which rolls back the 2017 FCC repeal of “net neutrality” rules, gives democrats a tool to use against US house republicans who are running for reelection in the upcoming November 2018 elections.

This US Senate bill is expected to be “dead on arrival” (DOA) in the US House of Representatives but some republicans who are up for reelection may want to reconsider this position as “Net Neutrality” is very popular with both their democratic and republican voters.

On May 16, 2018, David McCabe of AXIOS penned the following report, “Senate approves resolution restoring net neutrality rules”

“The Senate on Wednesday approved a resolution that rolls back the Federal Communications Commission’s 2017 repeal of net neutrality rules that required internet providers treat all content in the same way.”

“The big picture: The resolution doesn’t have much of a chance in the House — but Democrats are hoping that it puts the issue front and center with voters.”

“The details: The measure passed 52-47. Republicans Sens. Susan Collins (Maine,) John Kennedy (La.,) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) backed the resolution, with neither Kennedy nor Murkowski voicing support before Wednesday. The resolution restores rules that ban internet service providers from blocking or throttling content or providing paid fast lanes.”
  • “This vote comes down to one thing and one thing only: the extent to which you trust your cable company,” Kennedy told reporters after the vote.”
  • “He said the pressure put on him by activists who supported the measure had not been a factor in his decision.”

“What they’re saying: Sen. Brian Schatz pushed back on the idea that the restoration effort has limited chance in the House. “I would also point out that a lot of the Republican primaries are over, and some of these Republicans running in tough districts are going to be looking for opportunities to distinguish themselves as independent thinkers.”

  1. Congratulations. Someone in Ametican politics has good sense. Let’s see if that continues in future votes, or is just an aberration. In Canada this would call for a vote of non-confidence in the ruling party, and would probably lead to a new election. Too bad the USA doesn’t have such options, but then, US voters always know when general elections are happening. We in Canada do not. I prefer our way. There are more options for getting rid of bad leaders.

      I’m with you on this one. I only wish the US had laws to make it easier to oust a horrible leader. What will happen is that when the democrats win the majority of seats in the US Congress, there will be new laws created so that it will not be possible for future Donald Trumps to even run for office.

      But I am strongly in favor of net neutrality. Republicans will not succeed in running for elected office by opposing it.
